In the midst of this confusion an old man, Timur, is knocked down. His young slave, Liù, calls out for assistance. Suddenly, an Unknown Prince steps out of the crowd to help the pair. The Prince instantly recognizes Timur as his father, whom he was separated from when their kingdom was usurped. Timur explains that Liù was the only one of his subjects who remained loyal to him; she followed him into exile to take care of him. When the Prince asks Liù why she has been so kind to his father, she answers: "Because one day, from the palace, you smiled at me."

Liù:
Signore, ascolta! Ah, signore, ascolta!
Liù non regge più!

Ahimè...
My lord, listen, ah! listen!
Liù can bear it no more!
My heart is breaking!
Alas...
