Act I. Once upon a time, a busy square in Peking. A Mandarin proclaims that Turandot, Princess of China, will marry any prince who can solve her three riddles-however, the penalty for a wrong answer is death. The Prince of Persia has tried to win Turandot, and failed; now he will be executed. The bloodthirsty crowd begins to rush towards the palace to see the execution, but they are held back by guards.
