The Characters

Il Tabarro

Giorgetta (Soprano)- Michele’s younger wife who is frustrated with the drab life on the barge and instead seeks romance and adventure.

Frugola (Mezzo-Soprano)- Talpa’s wife who dreams of a cottage where she and her husband can enjoy their remaining years together.

Michele (Baritone)- Owner of the barge and Giorgetta’s jealous husband. He hopes to rekindle their dwindling relationship.

Luigi (Tenor)- Stevedore on the barge and in love with Giorgetta.

Tinca (Tenor)- Stevedore on the barge, he laments that the there is no future for them only backbreaking work.

Talpa (Bass)- Stevedore on the barge and Frugola’s husband.

Suor Angelica

Suor Angelica (Soprano)- A sister in a convent outside of Florence. She is of noble birth and was sent to the convent after bearing a child out of wedlock.

Suor Genovieffa (Soprano)- A sister of the convent, she relishes in the spring sunshine and daydreams about her days as a shepherdess.

Abbess (Mezzo-Soprano)- The head of the convent, she informs Suor Angelica that the Princess requests a meeting with her.

Monitor (Mezzo-Soprano)- Oversees the other sisters in the convent, she warns them that personal desires are sinful.

Mistress of Novices (Mezzo-Soprano)- In charge of the novices, she revels in the beauty of the convent’s fountain.

Suor Dolcina (Mezzo-Soprano)- A sister of the convent, she is known for her sweet tooth.

The Princess (Contralto)- Suor Angelica’s aunt, she brings tragic news of Angelica’s child and requests that Angelica sign a document that will divide her family’s inheritance.

Gianni Schicchi

Gianni Schicchi (Baritone)- The father of Lauretta, he tricks Buoso Donati’s relatives into granting him the majority of the family’s inheritance.

Lauretta (Soprano)- The daughter of Gianni Schicchi and in love with Rinuccio. She is forbidden to marry him because she is lacking a proper dowry.

Buoso Donati’s Relatives:

Zita (Contralto)- Buoso Donati’s sister and the mother of Rinuccio, she refuses to allow her son to marry Lauretta.

Rinuccio (Tenor)- He is in love with Lauretta and hopes that his uncle’s inheritance will provide enough money for them to get married. He enlists the help of Gianni Schicchi to acquire the riches.

Gherardo (Tenor)- He inquires about the city’s funeral bill and realizes with relief that it is not for his uncle.

Nella (Soprano)- She tries to bribe Gianni Schicchi into granting her a larger share of the will.

Betto di Signa (Bass)- He is worried that his uncle left his inheritance to an order of monks.

Simone (Bass)- Agrees to let Gianni Schicchi to decide how to divide the will.

La Ciesca (Mezzo-Soprano)- She tries to bribe Gianni Schicchi into granting her a larger share of the will.
Maestro Spinelloccio (Bass)- Buoso Donati’s doctor who inquires on his patient’s condition and is fooled into thinking Donati is still alive.

Ser Amantio di Nicolao (Baritone)- The city’s notary.
